Sumptuary Laws

My question this week is in response to the lesson earlier this week, about costuming and how actors were allowed to wear clothes or bear swords even though that went against the law. How did this exception come to be? Were theatre performances just socially accepted as places where rules could be broken, or where everything was “just pretend”? Did it help that some performances were done for aristocratic audiences?
