Cross Dressing and the Early Modern Stage

Cross-dressing was very important in early modern theatre, where young boys would play the female roles on stage, but was cross-dressing more accepted in the early modern era? Would women cross-dress? What if males cross-dressed off stage?
When did women begin to actually play female roles and were they treated or forced to be portrayed in the same silly manner that the young men played women in prior?
