Today in 1681, William Penn received a charter from Charles II licensing him to found Pennsylvania.
The late 1600s in the colonies on the Eastern seaboard of North America were where crazy ideas went to flourish. Sometimes these ideas were utterly crazy (in 1692, on February 29, the Salem Witch craze began with the accusations against Tituba, Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and others). Sometimes the ideas were just utopian in scope, like William Penn’s idea for Pennsylvania.
There’s a reason why the American polity still has this abiding belief in itself as a shining city upon a hill (nod to St Augustine)… it’s partially crazy schemes like this.
