1895 – The Premiere of An Ideal Husband

(Another non-early modern post… sorry everyone. Can’t help myself with some of these.)

Today in  1895 was the premiere of An Ideal Husband. Mark this by blackmailing someone you love.


This came out the same year as The Importance of Being Earnest – when Wilde was at the height of his powers and right before his long and disastrous trials.


In gaol (jail), Wilde’s spirit was broken irretrievably.  When he was released in 1897, he left England, never to return.  He died in Paris in 1900 after having
